“She stood at the doorway of birth, holding space for the new mother, supporting her, nurturing her, reminding her of her strength. A child is born. A woman enters through the doors of motherhood. Empowered.”

The word “doula” comes from the ancient Greek meaning “a woman who serves”. It is now used to refer to a trained and experienced woman who provides continuous physical, emotional and informational support to the mother before, during and after the birth.

  • Recognizes birth as a key experience the mother will remember all her life;
  • Understands the physiology of birth and the emotional needs of a woman in labour;
  • Encourages and assists the woman in gaining knowledge about birth in order to prepare for her experience;
  • Assists the woman in preparing for and carrying out her wishes for birth;
  • Stays with the woman throughout the labour;
  • Provides emotional support, physical comfort measures and an objective viewpoint, as well as helping the woman get the information she needs to make informed decisions
  • Perceives her role as nurturing and protecting the woman’s memory of the birth experience.
  • Encourages the woman’s partner to participate at his/her comfort level

“Doulas stand at the doorway of life. They support birthing women as they transform into open vessels. Although the aim of midwives or an obstetric medical team is to safeguard the health of the mother and the child, a doula focuses on the mother. A doula mothers the mother.”
